How to Disable Access to Task Manager on Windows 10

The Windows Task Manager is a key feature of the operating system, and Microsoft itself has tried to further refine it in the most recent Windows 10 updates. Even though it wasn’t updated in a significant manner, it continues to be an essential tool for both home users and IT pros as it provides valuable information on resource usage and running processes.

By default, however, Task Manager is available to every user running Windows, and despite this tool getting several improvements in Windows 10, there’s still no option to easily disable access to it. This means that anyone without the skills to change default settings can easily launch Task Manager and make modifications that would eventually affect system performance.

Fortunately, there are two different ways to block Task Manager on a Windows 10 Update, and the second works only on Pro SKUs. Read on to find out how to use them.

Windows 10 Home

Blocking access to the Windows 10 Task Manager can be done quickly from the Registry Editor with a dedicated key that disables this feature. An administrator account is required because otherwise you won’t be able to make changes to the system registry.

1. Launch the Registry Editor by pressing Win key + R and then by typing regedit. Navigate to the following path in the Registry Editor:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

2. Create a new DWORD value called DisableTaskMgr. Right-click the right pane and go to New > DWORD 32-bit. Enter the name DisableTaskMgr and click OK.

3. Next, change its value. By default, created value is 0, which means they are disabled. Now Change it to 1 to enable the key. so do this for DisableTaskMgr. Double-click it and enter value 1. 

4. Now you will find out that the Task Manager option is greyed out, while pressing CTRL + Alt + Del brings up a menu that does not include Task Manager.

Windows 10 Pro

For Windows 10 Pro Edition, you can easily restrict access to the Task Manager with Group Policy Editor.

1. Press Windows key + R and type gpedit.msc. Navigate to the following path in the Group Policy Editor:

User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Ctrl + Alt + Del Options

2. A policy called Remove Task Manager should be listed in the right side of the screen, and by default, it is set to Not Configured. Double-click this policy and set it to Enabled.

3. Now click OK button, finally the Task Manager option becomes greyed out when right-clicking the taskbar and it is also removed from the Ctrl + Alt + Del menu as well.

No reboot is required in either case, and reverting changes can be made by following the same steps and restoring the original configuration.

How to Disable Annoying Browser Notifications Forever

You hate it as much as I do: that little box that appears whenever you visit a news site or blog, asking for permission to bug you with notification boxes for stuff you don’t care about. Instead of throwing up your hands in defeat and learning to live with the annoyance, you can stop sites from bothering you altogether. Here’s how.

Chrome

Hit the Menu icon in Chrome (the three vertical dots) and select Settings. Scroll down to the bottom of your Settings page and open the Advanced section, where you can further modify how Chrome behaves. Scroll down and select the Content Settings tab in the Privacy and Security section.

Select Notifications to see which sites are allowed or barred from intruding into your life. Disabling the feature altogether will stop sites from poking their nose into your browser, asking to show you notifications about whatever it is they want. Unfortunately, that means notifications you do want will be a no-show unless you decide to individually toggle the notification settings for each site you find yourself visiting. To turn the feature off entirely, toggle the “Ask before sending” setting to “off,” and rejoice.

Firefox

If you’ve already given sites permission to send you notifications, you can revoke that permission in your security settings. Hit the menu icon and select Options, then select Privacy & Security. Scroll down to the Permissions section and select Notifications Settings icon. There you can revoke notification permissions from sites either individually or all at once.

Disabling notifications entirely requires a small modification to Firefox’s configuration page. In your address bar, enter “about:config” and search for “dom.webnotifications.enabled”. Right-click the entry and select Toggle to set its value to “false” and prevent notifications from showing up ever again.

Safari

Disabling notifications in Safari is pretty easy. Select Safari in your Mac’s menu bar, then select Preferences. Hit the Notifications tab and deselect the “Allow websites to ask for permission to send push notifications” box.

Microsoft Edge

You can’t disable notifications from the browser itself, but you can remove sites that already have access to your notification service in Microsoft Edge. Hit the menu icon in the top right and select Settings. Scroll down to Advanced Settings, then select Website permissions. There you can toggle on or off permissions for sites, including notifications.

Disabling notifications entirely in Microsoft Edge means you’ll need to edit your system settings, specifically what permissions Microsoft Edge has in terms of popping up unannounced. Hit the Start menu and select the Settings icon. Select System, then “Notifications & actions” where you can edit which apps will show up in your action center. Just scroll down to Microsoft Edge and toggle it off.

I must say that I am not an Adobe Photoshop expert but this software will make you look like you're using an advanced program such as Adobe Photoshop, Corel PaintShop Pro or GIMP. 

Obviously, it's not meant to be in the same league but there is no learning curve required. The truth is that everyone can achieve a similar result, you just need a couple of minutes or even seconds to convert your photos into art. You are allowed to do whatever you want with photos that you own. One of the biggest “improvements” that Mozilla claims is the Firefox memory usage, in particular, the vanquishing of memory leaks. Although Firefox memory usage improved a little over the last few years, it still uses a lot of memory; a little more than I feel comfortable with and for this reason I created Firemin.

MEMORY LEAKS

We like keeping our apps running for a few days (that’s just the way I roll) and because of this Firefox was using over ~800MB of memory after about 3 days. It’s quite normal for Firefox to be sucking up over 200MB of memory right off the bat. In a memory leak you’ll see the memory usage keep increasing the longer the program is open/in-use and this is exactly what happens with Firefox.

ENTER FIREMIN

Rather than complain about it, we decided to fix it. Enter Firemin; simply put, it will attempt to eliminate Firefox memory leaks and decrease the amount of memory Firefox uses. All I did was tweak our Memory Booster a little and applied it to Firefox (including Firefox extensions) and all the memory leaks was gone.

FIREMIN VS. WINDOWS MEMORY MANAGEMENT

Windows will also periodically scan running processes and tell them to release their unused memory. You could argue that this makes Firemin unnecessary, and you would be spot on. However, It is my opinion that Windows does not clean out memory as often as I would like it to. Firemin runs the clean memory API call a few times per second.
